While the main theme is divided into five subthemes; Violence Prevention, Community Inclusion & Literacy, Health Equity, Building Safe & Inclusive Physical Environments, and Healthy Relationships & Emergency Responses, we encourage submissions from the full spectrum of public health and endeavour to be inclusive of quality submissions even if they do not fit under our conference theme.
Our annual call for nominations for our board of directors is now on. If you are interested in becoming more involved with the Public Health Association of British Columbia, please consider joining our board. Being a PHABC Director is an interesting and challenging opportunity, a terrific way to build your professional network, connect with like-minded people to advance the principles of public health in British Columbia.
We are seeking individuals for a total of 10 positions including 3 executive position: Vice-President (2 year term), Treasurer (2 year term), Secretary (2 year term) and 7 Directors-at-large positions (2 year term).

We are looking for a Community Well-being Specialist to join our innovative and interdisciplinary team at BC Healthy Communities Society (BCHC). As part of our team, you will be working in a highly collaborative learning environment to design and deliver a wide range of healthy community programs and fee for service offerings to communities across BC. In your role, you will be working closely with multi-sectoral groups that include municipal governments and regional districts, regional health authorities, First Nations and not-for profit and community organizations, to build capacity for collaboration and action around critical community health challenges.
Key Responsibilities
Designing and delivering workshops, curriculum and planning processes;
Facilitating workshops and webinars and other learning events and processes;
Providing content expertise to support community focus areas (i.e. healthy built environments, food security, active transportation, social connectedness, health and climate change, age-friendly planning, housing, etc.);
Connecting directly with communities to assess where they are at – helping to determine what types of issues they are facing and how we can support their work;
Supporting the creation of multi-sectoral partnerships and fostering collaborations;
Work with communities to identify strategies to move forward and create positive solutions to difficult challenges they are facing—within their own local/regional context
Gathering data to help communities and BCHC determine if we are effecting change;
Analyzing and synthesizing information from facilitated sessions, identifying themes, opportunities, and areas for further development/support; and
Nurturing meaningful social relationships and partnerships with community groups and local champions in a range of other sectors.
About you …
You’re a highly experienced facilitator with a demonstrated track record. You have the ability to work through complex community challenges with multi-sectoral collaboratives. You are able to think on your feet, quickly synthesize data and adapt processes as needed.

You enjoy people! – and strive to facilitate and nurture meaningful relationships with communities and individuals, including those in various levels and types of government (local, regional, provincial, and First Nations);

You understand the links between key social and environmental determinants of health, especially within Indigenous communities. Focus areas could include one or more of the following:
o Developing Comprehensive Community Plans, rural health and development, affordable housing, poverty reduction strategies, food systems and food security, sustainability planning and climate action, community engagement processes, and/or community health assessment;
You recognize and understand the implications of emerging issues which may have broader influence on communities;
You bring research skills – to ask good questions and then find ways to answer them;
You are self-directed and you feel comfortable working on complex issues;
You show evidence of a high degree of organizational/planning skills and resourcefulness;
You have excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
To do this job you will need:
A degree in public health or community development, ideally with special coursework related to Indigenous peoples’ health (or equivalent is a bonus);
Minimum 3 years’ experience and demonstrated track record in facilitation and group processes;
Experience working with Indigenous communities;
Experience working in, or with, a local government (municipality, regional district or First Nation) and/or health authorities;
Experience in curriculum development/workshop design and evaluation;
Must be available to travel to communities across BC (estimated 2- 3 times per month); some evenings may be required for work/travel; and
Ability to work well independently and as part of highly collabortive a team.

Health Promotion Canada is a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting health promoters from every province and territory in Canada, sharing tools, resources and strategies to practice health promotion effectively, ethically and comprehensively.

Human Resource Assistant, Employee Health Services
JOB PURPOSE
At Surrey Schools, we believe in inclusion and want all employees to participate meaningfully in the work that we do, to the best of their ability, regardless of illness or injury.
This exciting, full-time opportunity in our Employee Health Services department will provide support for the District’s non-occupational Disability Management services. The Human Resource Assistant (HRA) will provide critical, confidential general HR support and perform a wide variety of administrative duties related to medical leaves, and Return to Work/Stay at Work initiatives for all employee groups – Teachers, Support Staff, Principals/Vice-Principals and Exempt Staff.
The HRA works under the direction of the HR Manager, Employee Health Services.
This is a temporary assignment for up to one (1) year, with the possibility of extension or permanency.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the HR Manager:
Assist with gathering relevant information for processing full and partial medical leaves
Review and implement routine Gradual Return to Work plans or accommodations for injured/ill employees, escalating enquiries to the HR Manager, Employee Health Services when appropriate
Update and maintain the Disability Management database and HR Information Systems with accuracy and precision
Collate data, prepare and maintain reports, distribute information to appropriate stakeholder groups and provide input on trends
Provide information, guidance and excellent customer service to internal and external stakeholders – Managers, Principals/Vice-Principals, Teachers, Support Staff, Union Representatives, and third party vendors, Insurers and Disability Management providers
Foster supportive, collaborative and productive relationships with all internal and external stakeholder contacts and contribute to the ongoing development of the District’s Disability Management, Accommodation and Employee Wellness policies and practices
Provide back up support for other employee groups within Employee Health Services
Demonstrate utmost discretion in handling and disclosing confidential and sensitive information
QUALIFICATIONS
Must possess a minimum of five (5) years’ related HR experience, preferably in a unionized setting and in a customer service centered environment. An equivalent combination experience, training and education will be considered
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of general HR practices.
Must possess knowledge/experience in Disability Management, Return to Work and Workplace Accommodation principles and jurisprudence. Completion of a relevant post-secondary programing Disability Management is an asset
Experience with HR information systems/databases is required
Must possess excellent computer skills and thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel is an asset.
Exemplary and proven interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
Proven critical thinking and problem solving abilities
Flexibility is a must, with a strong orientation for customer service and teamwork

WORKING CONDITIONS
This position works in an office environment, requiring infrequent travel to various work locations within School District #36 (Surrey). Conditions of employment are established by Surrey School District’s exempt terms of employment and Human Resources policies and procedures. As such, normal work hours are 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Additional hours or time outside of the normal work hours may be necessary based on operational requirements.

The Director reports to and is directly accountable to the HealthLink BC Executive Director of Operations. The Director may provide coverage for the HealthLink BC Executive Director in their absence.
