SESSIONAL INSTRUCTOR

The School of Public Health and Social Policy at the University of Victoria invites expressions of interest from individuals interested in sessional teaching.

This call is specifically for one course only, PHSP 589, Master of Public Health PRACTICUM for January 2017 term.  This is a graduate level practice course in the Master of Public Health program, usually requiring a PhD, or Master’s level degree with equivalent in relevant public health practice experience.

Units: 3.0 (1.5 teaching units)
Practicum
All MPH students are required to complete a 450 hour practicum.  This planned, supervised, and evaluated experience will usually be completed at the end of the student’s program of study.

General responsibilities for this course include:

  • Facilitating through distance delivery (workshops, teleconferences, online discussions, ) and carrying out practice check-in; communication with practicum supervisors/field guides; on site visits, if necessary
  • Ability to evaluate components related to experiential learning such as learning plans, practicum reports, learning journals, etc.
  • Consulting with students and being available to them through office hours, electronic communication and telephone
  • Evaluating student learning, including assessment of assignments/learning activities
  • Working collaboratively with other instructors
  • Working knowledge of instructional technology

Qualifications: Minimum of Master degree in Public Health or allied human services fields is essential, with doctoral degree completion preferred. Public health practice experience, or equivalent experience in a health field is required. The salary range for 1.5 units of teaching is $5,188 to $6,312 (effective May 2013).  Practice courses are remunerated for 1.5 units due to the practicum teaching work load (less than for theory courses), even if calendared for 3.0 units of credit for students.  Extra to load per student payment may apply. Residence in BC is desirable.
