June 30th Early Bird Deadline for 6th Global Forum on Health Promotion

Two days remain to take advantage of early bird rates for the 6th Global Forum on Health Promotion in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on October 16-17, 2016.

The Global Forum on Health Promotion is an initiative of Geneva’s Alliance for Health Promotion, an NGO in official relations with the World Health Organization. Five previous Global Forums have been held in Geneva since 2011. This year marks the first time the event has been held outside of Europe, and the occasion coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion. The 6th Global Forum is organized by the Alliance in collaboration with the PEI Department of Health & Wellness, The Quaich Inc. (PEI) and the Groupe entreprises en santé (QC).

Central to the 6th Global Forum’s programming are the five principles of the Ottawa Charter, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The 6th Global Forum will focus on how health promotion activities can support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals over the next 14 years, revealing how communities and organizations around the world are creating change for local, national and global impact.

Preliminary program highlights include keynote speaker Zsuzsanna Jakab from WHO Europe, a panel on the New Leadership in Health Promotion, and a roundtable on Governance for Health moderated by Mihály Kökény, MD., PhD., Former Minister for Health, Hungary.

Global Forum gathers international health leaders in Canada to discuss health promotion & sustainable development

CHARLOTTETOWN, June 13, 2016 /CNW/ – The 6th Global Forum on Health Promotion, October 16-17 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, will highlight the strategies and achievements of communities, organizations and health promotion leaders working locally to achieve global impact. Organized by a team of international and Canadian health promotion organizations, including the Alliance for Health Promotion (Geneva), The Quaich (Charlottetown) and Groupe entreprises en santé (Montreal), the theme of the 6th Global Forum is Health Promotion ~ At the Very Heart of Sustainability.

Central to the 6th Global Forum’s programming are the five principles of the Ottawa Charter, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In 2015, world leaders at the UN Sustainable Development Summit adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change by 2030. Although 15 years is a short time to achieve these goals, huge strides are being made through civil society initiatives in health promotion. And the impact is both local and global.

Gabriella Sozanski, coordinator with the Alliance, looks forward to welcoming international delegates in Charlottetown, alongside the Forum’s Canadian hosts: “The Global Forum is known for uniting community and government leaders, policy makers, researchers and practitioners from across sectors to share knowledge and build partnerships. Hosting the Forum in Canada in 2016 will bring a new dimension to our discussions and strengthen connections among health promotion leaders in Canada and abroad.”

Preliminary program highlights include keynote speaker Zsuzsanna Jakab from WHO Europe, as well as invited speakers who are trailblazers in the field of health promotion. Participants will take part in the creation of the PEI Declaration, a declaration calling for increased investment in health promotion to be submitted to the WHO’s 9th Global Conference on Health Promotion in Shanghai in November.

The 6th Global Forum is an initiative of the Alliance for Health Promotion, an NGO in official relations with the WHO that works to bridge the gap between international declarations and local realities. This is the first time the event is being held outside of Europe, and the Alliance is thrilled to be hosted by the Government of Prince Edward Island for the occasion, with PEI’s Department of Health and Wellness as an official sponsor.

News Release – Northern Health Child Health consultation engagement opportunities beginning May 19, 2016

Northern Health will begin its seventh board consultation series titled Growing up Healthy on May 19, 2016.

The consultation will focus on the health and well-being of children from conception to the age of 17 across northern B.C.

“Northern Health’s consultation series is an effective way to gather information from people in northern B.C. and identify how best to support the health of children and youth,” said Health Minister Terry Lake. “The consultation will provide an opportunity to promote existing work, particularly in rural areas, and recognizes that working to improve the health of the youngest residents is a key step to a healthier north.”

The consultation builds on the Chief Medical Health Officer’s Child Health report released in April that highlights supports available for a healthy start for children in northern B.C., as well as areas that need to be addressed according to evidence-based research. The Child Health report is available under the community accountability section on northernhealth.ca.

“The board is pleased with the Chief Medical Health Officer’s Child Health report as it provides the data and information we need to begin these discussions, and now we want to hear from people in communities across the north about their local perspectives,” said Dr. Charles Jago, Northern Health Board Chair. “There are a variety of methods and times that people can engage in this discussion, and we want people to participate in as many forums as they would like.”

The consultation will include:

  • Community meetings in 12 communities. These will include a presentation and working groups to discuss various ideas. A list of community meetings is available at the end of this release.
  • Nine stakeholder sessions with organizations at work directly with children and youth such as Ministry of Children and Family Development, school districts, and day cares.
  • Youth group sessions in select communities across the region.
  • Online engagement through a Thoughtexchange online survey on northernhealth.ca
