Summer School 2016 – Overview and Course Schedule

PHABC is proud to share the program for the upcoming 2016 Summer School titled:

Promoting Health and Sustainability: The Case of Climate Change and Energy Use

In the wake of last year’s CPHA report on the ecological determinants of health, the Lancet Commission’s on both Climate Change and Planetary Health and the Paris Summit Agreement on Climate Change, the health implications of climate change are assuming greater importance.

Here in BC those impacts include inundation from rising sea levels, more frequent and stronger storms, droughts and forest fires, urban heat events, and wider distribution of the ticks that cause Lyme disease, among other impacts.

As a result we have debates on pipelines, fracking, LNG and coal exports, on the one hand, and on the other hand the carbon tax, investments in public transit and alternative energy systems and changes in our urban planning, food systems and other responses.

Public health professionals and organisations will increasingly be drawn into both the policy debates and local action and response, whether it be to examine the health impacts of energy systems or the creation of healthier and more sustainable communities.

In this Summer School we will discuss these and other issues and use innovative mapping technology to identify what we can do and who we can work with in our communities to ensure we have a healthier, more just and more sustainable future.

Don’t miss this learning opportunity and share with your colleagues and networks

June 30th Early Bird Deadline for 6th Global Forum on Health Promotion

Two days remain to take advantage of early bird rates for the 6th Global Forum on Health Promotion in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on October 16-17, 2016.

The Global Forum on Health Promotion is an initiative of Geneva’s Alliance for Health Promotion, an NGO in official relations with the World Health Organization. Five previous Global Forums have been held in Geneva since 2011. This year marks the first time the event has been held outside of Europe, and the occasion coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion. The 6th Global Forum is organized by the Alliance in collaboration with the PEI Department of Health & Wellness, The Quaich Inc. (PEI) and the Groupe entreprises en santé (QC).

Central to the 6th Global Forum’s programming are the five principles of the Ottawa Charter, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The 6th Global Forum will focus on how health promotion activities can support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals over the next 14 years, revealing how communities and organizations around the world are creating change for local, national and global impact.

Preliminary program highlights include keynote speaker Zsuzsanna Jakab from WHO Europe, a panel on the New Leadership in Health Promotion, and a roundtable on Governance for Health moderated by Mihály Kökény, MD., PhD., Former Minister for Health, Hungary.

Global Forum gathers international health leaders in Canada to discuss health promotion & sustainable development

CHARLOTTETOWN, June 13, 2016 /CNW/ – The 6th Global Forum on Health Promotion, October 16-17 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, will highlight the strategies and achievements of communities, organizations and health promotion leaders working locally to achieve global impact. Organized by a team of international and Canadian health promotion organizations, including the Alliance for Health Promotion (Geneva), The Quaich (Charlottetown) and Groupe entreprises en santé (Montreal), the theme of the 6th Global Forum is Health Promotion ~ At the Very Heart of Sustainability.

Central to the 6th Global Forum’s programming are the five principles of the Ottawa Charter, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In 2015, world leaders at the UN Sustainable Development Summit adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change by 2030. Although 15 years is a short time to achieve these goals, huge strides are being made through civil society initiatives in health promotion. And the impact is both local and global.

Gabriella Sozanski, coordinator with the Alliance, looks forward to welcoming international delegates in Charlottetown, alongside the Forum’s Canadian hosts: “The Global Forum is known for uniting community and government leaders, policy makers, researchers and practitioners from across sectors to share knowledge and build partnerships. Hosting the Forum in Canada in 2016 will bring a new dimension to our discussions and strengthen connections among health promotion leaders in Canada and abroad.”

Preliminary program highlights include keynote speaker Zsuzsanna Jakab from WHO Europe, as well as invited speakers who are trailblazers in the field of health promotion. Participants will take part in the creation of the PEI Declaration, a declaration calling for increased investment in health promotion to be submitted to the WHO’s 9th Global Conference on Health Promotion in Shanghai in November.

The 6th Global Forum is an initiative of the Alliance for Health Promotion, an NGO in official relations with the WHO that works to bridge the gap between international declarations and local realities. This is the first time the event is being held outside of Europe, and the Alliance is thrilled to be hosted by the Government of Prince Edward Island for the occasion, with PEI’s Department of Health and Wellness as an official sponsor.

To learn more about the Forum and to register, visit www.globalforumpei-forummondialipe.com. Early bird rates and student rates are available until June 30.

PHABC – Request for quotes – communications plan

The Public Health Association of BC is seeking proposals from consultants to develop a communications plan

Purpose

Under the direction of the Executive Director of the Public Health Association of BC (PHABC) the consultant will lead the development of a communications plan for the association.  The communications plan should focus on engagement strategies and approaches.  It should incorporate communication channels, such as social media platforms, the website, a newsletter, and an annual summer school and conference. It should also identify target audiences and promote the association and its values while engaging members and communities with the association.

Background

The PHABC is a voluntary, non-profit, NGO (est. 1953), affiliated with Canadian Public Health Association. The PHABC promotes and protects public health by actively working to advance the development and implementation of healthy public policy, by encouraging and facilitating research that supports public health and cooperating regionally, nationally and internationally with partner organizations. Its national linkages enable the PHABC to participate in dialogue and action on matters of interest across Canada. The PHABC has a long track record of fiscal and administrative stability and considerable experience with community development, continuing education, initiatives addressing the determinants of health and project planning, implementation, assessment and evaluation. PHABC has partnered with the federal and provincial governments to carry out significant knowledge development and exchange projects. The association is currently responsible for administering a dozen projects for the province of BC, the Federal government, Regional Health Authorities and other clients.
