BC Association for Child Development and Intervention – Project Lead – Training Program Development

BC Association for Child Development and Intervention

Project Lead – Training Program Development

The BC Association for Child Development and Intervention (BCACDI) represents member agencies across BC that contract with Government to deliver services to children and youth with special needs and their families. Services delivered include foundational programs such as the Infant Development Program, Supported Child Development Program, and Early  Intervention Therapies (Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology).

Background

The Early Childhood Intervention Services Prioritization Framework (ECISPF) was developed with consultation from stakeholders. It is designed to ensure that social factors are considered when planning programs and when prioritizing children who are waitlisted for services within the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) contracted agencies who deliver foundational programs. The goal is to create consistent approaches to service planning and
prioritization practices which allow families to access the appropriate therapy services at the appropriate time, while recognizing the barriers to services that are present for families experiencing vulnerability. A pilot of the ECISPF has identified the need for strengthened understanding of the impact of social factors and trauma on child development. This needed education fits within three themes:

  • Building Indigenous cultural competency and an understanding of how the legacy of colonization and intergenerational trauma impacts early childhood development for Indigenous children
  • Building an understanding of how adverse childhood experiences impact brain development and can led to developmental delay
  • Developing the skills to facilitate Trauma Informed Practice

BCACDI is recruiting an experienced project manager to lead the development and implementation of a training plan for early childhood intervention service providers, specifically Early Intervention therapists, Infant Development consultants, Aboriginal Infant Development consultants, Supported Child Development consultants, and Aboriginal Supported Child Development consultants on the effects of adverse childhood experiences, trauma, and the legacy of colonization on development. This training plan will involve leveraging existing resources, such as Healing Families, Helping Systems: A Trauma-Informed Practice Guide for Working with Children, Youth and Families.

Objectives of the training plan

  • Early childhood intervention service providers understand how the legacy of colonization impacts Indigenous families who would benefit from early intervention services, consider Indigenous Ancestry in their service planning and prioritization practices, and consider what actions they may need to take in order to provide culturally safe and appropriate service
  • Early childhood intervention service providers understand how social factors and adverse childhood experiences can impact brain development and consider these factors in their service planning and prioritization practices
  • Early childhood intervention service providers have the tools to approach their practice with a trauma informed lens and trauma informed practices are integrated within MCFD contracted agencies and staff
