The School of Public Health and Social Policy at the University of Victoria invites expressions of interest from individuals interested in sessional teaching.
This call is specifically for one course only, PHSP 550, Perspectives in Social Policyand Public Health for May 2017 term. This is a graduate level theory course in the Master of Public Health program, usually requiring a PhD or Master’s level degree, with equivalent in relevant public health policy practice experience.
The course is scheduled to run on campus at UVic in Victoria, May 1-5, 2017 inclusive, 8:30-4:30 each day. A concurrent online course site supports course completion and final assignment submission for remainder of summer term (i.e. until July 31) however, most of the course is complete by May 5.

Perspectives in Social Policy and Public Health
Informed by values of social justice, equity and diversity, focuses on a range of theoretical and practical perspectives that critically assess social policy and practice and public health issues in Canada in historical, contemporary and comparative contexts.
Note: A requirement of this course is a condensed five day on–campus seminar.
General responsibilities for this course include:
Facilitating through on campus delivery this dynamic week long course with learning activities, guest speakers, group work, individual work, etc.
Ability to evaluate components related to learning in a face-to-face theory course such as learning plans, learning journals, short essays, briefing notes, final papers/projects, oral presentations as these relate specifically to current context of social/health policy
Extensive knowledge and experience with policy theory and practice including development, critique, implementation, evaluation
Consulting with students and being available to them through office hours, electronic communication and telephone during the on-site and for the remainder of term.
Evaluating student learning, including grading of assignments/learning activities
Working collaboratively with other instructors
Working knowledge of instructional technology
Qualifications: This is a graduate level theory course in the Master of Public Health program, usually requiring a PhD or Master’s level degree, with equivalent in relevant public health policy practice experience. The salary range for 1.5 units of teaching is $5,188 to $6,312 (effective May 2013).

The Medical Beneficiary and Pharmaceutical Services Division (MBPSD) leads, innovates and manages the Province’s drug and medical beneficiary programs to improve health outcomes. It is responsible for the overall coordination, decision making, and performance of the BC Medical Services Plan (with respect to beneficiaries) and the BC PharmaCare program.
Pharmacist – Decision Support and Evaluation Guidance (DSEG)
The pharmacist provides professional consultation, policy advice and evaluation support for the Decision Support and Evaluation Guidance (DSEG) unit of the Drug Intelligence and Optimization branch. The pharmacist also collaborates with colleagues in Formulary Management, Special Authority, and Therapeutic Review & Optimal Use, as well as other branches within and beyond Medical Beneficiary & Pharmaceutical Services Division.
Pharmacist – Therapeutic Review and Optimal Use (TROU)
The pharmacist provides professional consultation, liaison, policy advice, literature evaluation and knowledge translation support for the TROU unit of the Drug Intelligence and Optimization branch. The TROU pharmacist also collaborates with colleagues in Formulary Management, Special Authority, and Drug Decision and Evaluation Guidance units, as well as other branches within and beyond MBPSD.
Qualifications for this role include: Graduation from recognized Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences with a minimum Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy; current registration and license in good standing as a Licensed Pharmacist with the College of Pharmacists of BC; considerable (2-5 years) experience as a licensed practicing pharmacist in BC retail or hospital pharmacy practice; experience in medical literature research, analysis and interpretation.

The Emergency Management Unit (EMU) is an integral component of Health Emergency Management British Columbia (HEMBC) with responsibility for ensuring that the Ministry of Health (MoH) is prepared to respond to emergency events that impact MoH operations and/or that impact the health system.
To mitigate the impacts of any provincial emergency, the Emergency Manager takes a leadership role in the development, maintenance, monitoring and improvement of Ministry emergency response and business continuity plans; the development and integration of emergency response exercises and training, and emergency response operations and operational readiness. The Emergency Manager provides expertise in the area of health emergency management and business continuity planning, leading related initiatives, consulting with stakeholders to ensure plans are current and feasible, collaborating with stakeholders on emergency management initiatives and providing expert advice on defining, establishing and outlining emergency response roles and responsibilities for the health sector emergency response structure.
Qualifications for this role include: University degree in emergency management, health, business or public administration or other related field and two years related experience in emergency management, operations, policy and program development or equivalent combination of education and experience.; experience reviewing and analyzing complex multi-faceted issues related to health planning and/or emergency planning.; demonstrated project management experience.; experience working effectively with internal and external stakeholders
