The School of Public Health and Social Policy at the University of Victoria invites expressions of interest from individuals interested in sessional teaching.
This call is specifically for one course only, PHSP 550, Perspectives in Social Policy and Public Health for May 2017 term. This is a graduate level theory course in the Master of Public Health program, usually requiring a PhD or Master’s level degree, with equivalent in relevant public health policy practice experience.
The course is scheduled to run on campus at UVic in Victoria, May 1-5, 2017 inclusive, 8:30-4:30 each day. A concurrent online course site supports course completion and final assignment submission for remainder of summer term (i.e. until July 31) however, most of the course is complete by May 5.

Perspectives in Social Policy and Public Health Informed by values of social justice, equity and diversity, focuses on a range of theoretical and practical perspectives that critically assess social policy and practice and public health issues in Canada in historical, contemporary and comparative contexts. Note: A requirement of this course is a condensed five day on–campus seminar. |
General responsibilities for this course include:
- Facilitating through on campus delivery this dynamic week long course with learning activities, guest speakers, group work, individual work, etc.
- Ability to evaluate components related to learning in a face-to-face theory course such as learning plans, learning journals, short essays, briefing notes, final papers/projects, oral presentations as these relate specifically to current context of social/health policy
- Extensive knowledge and experience with policy theory and practice including development, critique, implementation, evaluation
- Consulting with students and being available to them through office hours, electronic communication and telephone during the on-site and for the remainder of term.
- Evaluating student learning, including grading of assignments/learning activities
- Working collaboratively with other instructors
- Working knowledge of instructional technology
Qualifications: This is a graduate level theory course in the Master of Public Health program, usually requiring a PhD or Master’s level degree, with equivalent in relevant public health policy practice experience. The salary range for 1.5 units of teaching is $5,188 to $6,312 (effective May 2013).
