Centre for Applied Research in Mental Health and Addiction (CARMHA) is currently recruiting for a Research Assistant (RA) who is passionate and well-versed in academic and applied research relating to mental health and addiction. The RA will work with one of CARMHA’s dedicated research teams in the execution of specific research tasks related to one of the centre’s key projects.

CARMHA is an internationally recognized research centre conducting innovative and interdisciplinary scientific research related to mental health and substance use, primarily in the areas of health systems and population health and epidemiology. CARMHA is based within the Faculty of Health Sciences, Simon Fraser University.
Our primary mission is to conduct research, generate evidence, and translate knowledge into policy and practice in a way that is innovative, relevant and effective in preventing and reducing the burden of disease related to mental health and substance use.

Who you are
You have completed a Master’s degree in health or social sciences OR you have completed your Bachelor’s degree in health or social sciences and have a minimum of two years of related research experience (including experience conducting systematic reviews)
You have applied experience of both qualitative and quantitative research methods and have experience conducting systematic literature reviews
You have experience providing administrative support in a research setting including managing research files and documents, coordinating team meetings, and taking meeting minutes
You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and have contributed to the development of reports, publications and research presentations
You are efficient at managing your own time and demonstrate excellent organizational skills
You are passionate about, and committed to contributing to the field of mental health and addiction research
You have applied knowledge and experience in working on complex systems issues, either directly in mental health and addiction or other areas of health and social care that intersect with mental health and addiction
You are trustworthy and work well independently and as a part of a multi-disciplinary team
Position Type
One-year, full- time contract with the possibility of extension. The anticipated start time for the position is the end of July, 2017.

The Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council Nursing Department is currently accepting qualified applications for possible future openings as Primary Nurses on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. The positions are dependent upon successful funding application with expectant confirmation by early July 2017. The Primary Nurses would be based out of the Tofino NTC Nursing office providing primary and remote nursing service to the Ahousaht Nation.

Remote Nursing Certification
Minimum of 5 years clinical nursing experience with First Nations with expertise in Relational Practice, Reflective Practice and Trauma-Informed Care
Community Health Nursing experience particularly in Maternal/Child/Communicable Disease Programs

The BC Poverty Reduction Coalition (BCPRC) raises public awareness about poverty in BC and advocates to the government of British Columbia for a strong, comprehensive provincial poverty reduction plan. The BCPRC aims to use regional organizing to strengthen relationships among anti-poverty groups within the region and to support connection to our provincial network in order to achieve a louder, better coordinated voice for people in poverty and their allies in the Okanagan. It has a dual focus:
To inform and change attitudes about people living in poverty.
To campaign for positive change in tackling the root causes of poverty.
The BCPRC supports existing campaigns. In particular, it increases the involvement of those with direct experience of poverty and builds movements in support of change.
The position is part-time (1 day/week) from October 2017 to December 2018. Possibility of contract extension and/or additional hours, fundraising permitting. Vancity Community Foundation operates as Secretariat for the BC Poverty Reduction Coalition so the contract position is coordinated through their office in Vancouver but physically located within Kelowna.
The successful candidate will work in partnership with existing organizations to develop and implement strategies for promoting change in the region. They will have skills in building networks and partnerships, campaigning expertise and be committed to the project being directed by the priorities of people in poverty and local organizations working with people in poverty. The post-holder will be required to travel throughout the region and occasionally to Vancouver to meet with colleagues (all travel expenses covered).
Main Responsibilities:
Promote regional campaigning hub
Act as a resource for local campaigns and groups which work to further the interests of people in poverty in keeping with the aims and values of this project
Strengthen existing networks and build practical partnerships
Direct resources and opportunities to those with direct experience of poverty to facilitate their involvement
Campaigning
Collate regional evidence and case studies in support of identified provincial campaigns
Support local organizations/networks to campaign on regional/local issues
Connect with regional academic/community researchers to partner on community-led research in support of identified campaigns
Leadership Development
Facilitate leadership development initiative with people in poverty to ensure their voices are leading campaigns (using model already developed by BCPRC)
Assist with the development and implementation of the community engagement strategy; provide mentorship to community members involved
Assist with the coordination and facilitation of events, meetings and workshops (includes public speaking); maintain long-term engagement of participants
Create spaces for interaction between people in poverty and the wider community
Build relationships with local journalists and connect spokespeople in poverty to local media
Attitude Shifting / Movement Building In consultation and partnership with existing organizations, to:
Develop, refine and implement strategies for promoting change in the region
Influence key MLAs and opinion formers
Engage with allied groups where there is potential for untapped support
Nurture/publicize outbreaks of community solidarity
Engage and mobilize a wider community support base to take action/support identified campaigns
Work with people in poverty, community partners and contractors to develop outreach materials including printed, online and video
Organizational
Provide oversight of the projects’ activities in the region, ensuring that it remains true to its aims and values
Induct and supervise any volunteers
Meet with other staff members as required
Work with other members of the staff team to define initial and ongoing campaign priorities and benchmarks for success
Oversee the project expenditure within the region, maintaining appropriate records and liaising with the Community Organizer regarding expenditure
Collate campaign metrics and support any independent evaluation
Report to the Community Organizer on the work of the project
Bring difficult or contentious issues to the Community Organizer where appropriate
Undertake other tasks as relevant and commensurate with the post.
The successful candidate will possess all or most of the following skills & qualifications:
Ability to articulate and work with the ideas grounding the BCPRC; commitment to the BCPRC’s purpose and success
Knowledge and passion about social justice
Experience in community organizing and group facilitation
A relationship builder who can work with diverse participants, listen to the needs and perspectives of others, and strive for consensus when possible
Knowledge of the political context in BC, primarily at the provincial level but with some understanding of the municipal and federal level
Knowledge of the experiences of people in poverty and a good understanding of the issues they are facing
Experience of providing a platform for those directly affected by injustice
Willingness to take on administrative duties
Ability to manage projects effectively
Excellent interpersonal skills

Contract details

The Health Protection Branch in the Ministry of Health safeguards the population from potential health threats by developing legislation and policy for the prevention and reduction of risk of harms from pathogens and contaminants in food, soil, air, and water, environmental contamination and global change. As the Senior Human Health Risk Assessment Specialist – Land and Water Use, you are the leading provincial authority on the human health risk from land and industrial development. Leading on a variety of team projects, you aid in the development of public health risk management legislation and associated policies, regulations, guidelines and standards related to land and water development. You conduct and develop province wide resource management plans and policies related to public health protection and lead project planning sessions to determine project scope, define deliverables and develop charters. Building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders in the natural resource sector, you represent the Ministry at high profile inter-jurisdictional working groups and committees to negotiate agreements. Qualifications for this role include:
Master’s or Ph.D. specializing in an area related to human health risk assessment (such as but not limited to public health sciences, epidemiology, exposure assessment, chemical fate and behaviour, natural resource management, environmental management, environmental engineering or toxicology) and a minimum of 2 years of related experience.
Consideration may be given for a Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline combined with a minimum of 4 years of experience.

Related experience must include:
Experience developing and/or implementing human health or ecological risk assessment protocols and applying scientific approaches for policy or environmental quality standard development in regulatory settings;
Experience in presenting and explaining human health or ecological risk assessment protocols and complex scientific information to peer groups and in other Ministries or in academic forums, in understandable terms in public service and public settings;
Experience negotiating, communicating and building consensus among various government agencies, stakeholder and industry groups on public health risk management policies or similar ‘high profile’ issues.

About the position:
Reporting to the Director of Strategic Partnerships, the Manager of Provincial Initiatives is responsible for creating a framework for province-wide expansion of key best practice YMCA initiatives. The Manager of Provincial Initiatives will support provincial roll-out of regional programs by utilizing a community engagement approach. Key priorities for this position will be to support regional YMCA associations to develop capacity and community connections to successfully implement initiatives.
Major Responsibilities:
Support the provincial roll-out of the YMCA Youth Mindfulness Initiative, reaching 25 communities and 2500 youth over 3 years
Identify best practice YMCA programs that are a good fit for province-wide expansion
Collaborate with other regional YMCA associations to support province-wide expansion of programs that have demonstrated positive health and social impacts within their individual regions
Use evidence based research to demonstrate promising practices, and to determine what elements need to be in place to ensure successful provincial expansion
Understand and communicate the different health and social priorities for communities across the various regions of British Columbia
Build community partnerships to facilitate extending the reach of YMCA programs to other areas of the province
Work closely with YMCA of BC leadership teams

Requirements:
Master’s degree in relevant field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience

The Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council (NTC) is seeking a part-time (0.6) Registered Nurse to provide a full continuum of Community Health Nursing services to individuals in a variety of community-based settings in NTC’s Southern Region territory. Our Nursing services follow the Nuu-chah-nulth Nursing framework that ensures culturally safe, relational, reflective and trauma informed Nursing Practice. This position is based out of Port Alberni.
Responsibilities will also include:
Provide comprehensive health care with an emphasis on healthy living, illness prevention, health education, chronic disease management, and clinical intervention
Establish and maintain community partnerships to help address health issues, reduce the incidence of disease, and to enhance the health of individuals, families groups and general populations

Current RN license with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC)
