The Public Health Association of British Columbia is proud to host the 2025 Summer Institute, a virtual event that will explore what it means to build a Wellbeing Society—one that prioritizes people, planet, and future generations. Drawing inspiration from the World Health Organization’s Geneva Charter for Well-being (2022), this year’s Institute invites public health professionals, researchers, academics, policymakers, and advocates to reimagine the role of public health in shaping a fairer, healthier, and more sustainable world.
At the heart of this event is the Geneva Charter’s call to action: to achieve “equitable health now and for future generations without breaching ecological limits.” Participants will explore this vision through five interconnected principles. First, a Wellbeing Society places the wellbeing of both people and the planet at the centre of governance and economic systems—introducing frameworks such as governance for wellbeing and wellbeing economics. Second, it recognizes equity as a foundational value, requiring social and environmental justice and the dismantling of barriers to health. Third, it extends that equity across generations, ensuring today’s decisions do not jeopardize the wellbeing of tomorrow’s youth. Fourth, it demands that we act within the Earth’s planetary boundaries, acknowledging the health implications of climate change, pollution and ecological degradation. Finally, it challenges us to reimagine systems of governance that support collective wellbeing and collaborative decision-making at every level of society.
The 2025 Summer Institute offers more than dialogue—it is a space for strategic thinking, systems exploration, and cross-sector collaboration. Through keynote discussions, facilitated conversations, and interactive sessions, attendees will reflect on how the public health field can lead in co-creating communities that are just, regenerative, and deeply rooted in wellbeing. Join us as we imagine—and begin to build—a future in which public health is a driving force for societal transformation.
We will be circulating more news in the coming weeks, including information on the Scientific Program Committee, speakers, and presentations.

About PHABC’s Summer Institute
Over the last fourteen years, the Summer Institute has provided excellent opportunities for continuing education and professional development.
The event provides a unique evidence-based program where participants can actively learn, evaluate and test the principles of the curriculum through keynote presentations, best practice examples and case studies, team building exercises, and hands-on activities.
We strive to bring together public health professionals who work directly or indirectly with public health issues across numerous social service sectors and help to foster innovative solutions to the identified issues.
