Shelly Sorensen – Director-at-Large

Shelly Sorensen is a Registered Dental Hygienist in Duncan, BC.  She has been a Public Health Dental Hygienist for over 6 years now working with Cowichan Tribes, the largest First Nations band in BC.  She also provides COHI (Children’s Oral Health Initiative Services) to children aged 0-7 and expectant mothers.  She has been a Certified Dental Assistant for over 12 years now as well.  She works full time in Public Health, and part time in private practice.  She has completed her Dental Public Health Diploma with NWTC, and is currently working on university courses to apply for my BA in Health and Community Services.  She is a volunteer for the PHABC’s membership committee, and a member of the College of Dental Hygienists of BC’s Inquiry Committee.  In 2010 she had the honor of accepting the Canadian Public Health Association’s Amgen Award in 2010 for our Health Centre, Ts’ewulhtun Health. She  was a Semi-Finalist for the Listerine Dental Hygienist Hero Award with the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association.  In 2011 she was a Cowichan Success by 6 Champion for Children Award of Excellence Finalist here in Duncan, BC.  Most recently, she was a recipient of Health Canada’s 2012 Regional Director General Award of Excellence for work done with the FNIH Children’s Oral Health Initiative Team.
