Conference 2023: submit your call for abstracts now!

Call for Abstracts: Extended to October 20th at 5pm

Healthy Aging is one of the most critical public health priorities, as it has the potential to dramatically improve the quality of life of older adults and reduce the stress on families and health systems in the future. Assistive technologies are just one strategy for enhancing and supporting healthy aging, which provides older adults the opportunity to experience higher quality of life and more inclusive communities. This can range from supporting active transportation, to digital monitoring at home.

PHABC is interested in learning from your research, or your direct experiences. We are interested in assistive technology solutions for older adults, along with strategies to address equity concerns in relation to accessing, adopting, and sustaining the use of these new technologies for older adults.

Individuals and groups are invited to submit abstracts for one or more of the following presentation format(s):

  • Oral presentation (15-20 minutes)
  • Poster presentations (in-person “walk about” during poster session & on display both days)
  • Workshop (1.5 hours)

Based on the restricted opportunities for oral presentations, we strongly encourage applicants to consider structuring their proposals, particularly if they are practice-based research, around a poster presentation.

The poster session will be held at the end of the first day on the conference on November 21st and will be designed as a ‘walk-about’ in order to structure maximum interaction with the presenters and their work.

The call for abstracts deadline is extended to October 20th at 5pm.

Truth and Reconciliation: A Holistic Obligation

The mandate for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) states: “The truth telling and reconciliation process as part of an overall holistic and compressive response to the Indian Residential School legacy is a sincere indication and acknowledgement of the injustices and harms experienced by Aboriginal people and the need for continued healing. This is a profound commitment to establishing new relationships embedded in mutual recognition and respect that will forge a brighter future. The truth of our common experiences will help set our spirits free and pave the way to reconciliation.”

As the Public Health Association of BC (PHABC), we recognize and acknowledge the implicit and explicit physical, emotional and spiritual violence imposed on Indigenous peoples that have enacted and continue to enact multi-generational trauma. These atrocities must be brought to light and healed in order to ensure the health of all on this land we call home.

As a settler organization that operates on Turtle Island, we are deeply honoured to collaborate, partner and advocate with Indigenous communities to establish new relationships embedded in mutual recognition and respect that will forge a brighter future.

The foundations of public health focus on the core circumstances that drive people towards healthy or unhealthy conditions. Canada as a country, government and people must honour, respect, and act on our collective responsibilities towards upholding Indigenous peoples’ rights and reconciliation.

PHABC turns to international and national experts to guide our organizational goals and values. We support and uphold BC’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. PHABC also supports the TRC’s calls to action and, in particular, is actively committed to calls 18 and 19 focused on health; and call 92, which aims to apply the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples’ reconciliation framework to corporate policies.

PHABC is grateful and honoured to be a trusted health organization among Indigenous lands, peoples, and governments. We deeply respect and care for the holistic health journey experienced by Indigenous peoples and the Indigenous lands we are humbled to call home. It is an honour to be part of the ripples of the healing and reconciliation journey.

PHABC and POVC value and advocate for 2SLGBQTIA+ rights

The Public Health Association of BC (PHABC) and Prevention of Violence Canada (POVC) recognize that people who identify as 2SLGBQTIA+ continue to face barriers to accessing equitable, safe, and reliable resources to health care and education.

Contrary to the anti-SOGI (sexual orientation and gender identity) protestors’ rhetoric, youth who experience inequitable access to these fundamental rights suffer mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.

All children have the right to safe spaces, inclusive education, and an impenetrable sense of belonging. These foundational rights lay the groundwork for healthy adults of all genders who can meaningfully contribute to our communities.

PHABC and POVC actively reject all policies of discrimination, harm and hate. PHABC and POVC continue to advocate, support and advance 2SLGBQTIA+ rights within systemic, structural and political platforms.

PHABC is a provincial organization dedicated to advancing valuable public health policies, projects, and programs, both nationally and internationally. POVC is a national organization committed to progressing peace and justice, and condemning all forms of violence. Both PHABC and POVC echo Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s sentiments: 2SLGBQTIA+ identities are valid and valued.

PHABC and POVC stands against all forms of hate speech, misinformation and disinformation.
