On June 19, 2020, B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix appointed Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond to lead an independent investigation into allegations of racism in the province’s health care system. Turpel-Lafond and her team are currently working on that investigation.

The Ministry of Health has overall responsibility for ensuring that quality, appropriate, cost-effective and timely health services are available to all British Columbians. Within the Ministry of Health, the Population and Public Health Division’s goals focus on improving people’s overall health and well-being by promoting health; preventing disease, disability, and injury; protecting them from harm; and assisting them to acquire the self-care and self-management skills they need.  The intent of these actions is to promote a healthier population and reduce current and future demands on the health care system.

In the role of Director, you will provide leadership and manage a team of professionals to provide policy expertise for development of outcome-based legislation, policy and supporting change strategies to minimize the impact of environmental stressors.  You will also have a lead role in developing and evaluating provincial standards for drinking water protection, onsite sewage management, recreational water (pools and beaches), pesticides, industrial work camps, biosolids and performs a public health oversight function that is vital to the health and wellness of BC residents.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Civil/Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Sciences, Public or Health Administration or related discipline, and minimum 5 years related work experience; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Related work experience is defined as a combination of the following:

  • Program management experience, including planning and development of: policies, strategies, projects, and coordinating resources and team members.
  • Experience negotiating with, influencing and working productively and cooperatively with internal and external stakeholders to advance policy goals.
  • Experience preparing policy responses and analysis and recommending changes to legislation and leading staff in their preparation.
  • Issues management and responding to issues that are at times linked with controversy and highly charged public debate.
  • Experience communicating with variety of audiences including: preparing reports, technical writing, presentations and media.
  • Contract management experience.
  • Experience in environmental health, such as: water policy, drinking water management, wastewater management, watershed management, health risk assessment and management, environmental health and/or systems design.

COVID-19 Rapid Evidence Service

The National Collaborating Centre for Methods and Tools (NCCMT) is supporting national, provincial/territorial, and local/regional responses to COVID-19 in Canada by conducting rapid reviews on priority topics identified by decision makers. As part of the Rapid Evidence Service, the NCCMT conducts rigorous searches and appraisal of the available literature on key questions about COVID-19; provides summaries and key messages of the literature; and identifies knowledge gaps. Topics addressed thus far include: opioids, alcohol consumption, reducing transmission, and cohort isolation. New reviews are being conducted weekly, so check back regularly to see what’s new.

Pandemic’s Mental Health Toll Is Hammering Marginalized People

UBC researchers part of study that shows greater impact on groups from LGBTQ+ to low income to Indigenous.

Marginalized Canadians have borne the brunt of economic and social impacts of COVID-19, and new data suggests they are shouldering the mental health burden as well.

Racialized, LGBTQ2S+ and low-income people are more likely to be experiencing worsening mental health and problems coping with the turmoil of the last few months.

And they are also least likely to have the means and support to access mental health care — especially now.
