School District No. 8 – Health, Wellness and Safety Manager

School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) located in the Kootenays, serves a diverse number of communities including Crawford Bay, Creston, Kaslo, Meadow Creek, Nelson, Salmo, Slocan, South Slocan, Winlaw, Wynndel, Yahk and the surrounding rural areas.  The District covers a large geographic area with two time zones. We are searching for a trained and well-experienced person to join our team as the Heath, Wellness, and Safety Manager.  This position is an excluded position.  The ideal candidate for this position will bring their background in Health and Safety to our District, in order to attend to the Health, Safety and Wellness needs for our District.


Job Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Human Resource Services, this position will implement and manage comprehensive health safety and wellness programs across the District, ensuring a health and safe work environment for our employees.  This position will act as a resource person for a variety of health, safety and wellness matters throughout the District and will lead the District in strategic planning, implementation, reporting and monitoring of health, safety and wellness in the District.

 

Job Requirements:

1.    Degree in Human Resources with a specialty in Health and Safety, or a related degree.  
2.    Three (3) to five (5) years related experience in the field of Health and Safety, preferably in a public sector unionized environment.
3.    Knowledge of legislation and regulation pertaining to health and safety in the workplace.
4.    Knowledge of work site inspection and accident prevention techniques, and of health and safety hazards for a wide variety of trade, labour, technical, teaching and office operations.
5.    Excellent computer skills including databases, spreadsheets, and word processing in order to enter data, analyze data, and plan as a result of data outcomes.
6.    Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing including in a presentation environment.
7.    Maintains effective working relationships with a wide variety of staff, outside agencies and community contacts.
8.    Strong ability to multi-task, influence, negotiate and resolve conflict.
9.    Works with minimal supervision.
10.   Valid BC Driver’s License as travel throughout our diverse district will be required.
11.   Advises and assists senior management and other persons involved in planning, controlling and maintaining a healthy and safe work environment.
12.  Supports the District’s objectives and overall strategies in order to effectively plan, prioritize and integrate health, safety and wellness resources across the District.
13.   Works with Worksite Health and Safety Committees as an employer’s representative to develop and implement an integrate program to promote an awareness of safety in the workplace.
14.   Arranges for occupational health and safety testing and/or evaluations of the workplace by external agencies/consultants as may be necessary.
15.   Acts in the capacity of an employer’s representative in connection with worksite inspections and responses to WorkSafeBC inspection reports and orders.
16.    Liaises with a variety of district staff, legislative organizations, Health Boards and other outside agencies as necessary.
17.    Plans and conducts New Worker/Young Worker orientation with regard to safety, health, and wellness.
18.    District representative on a variety of District committees (Teacher Wellness, JEIS, JSAC, Duty to Accommodate, etc).
19.    Acts as a resource for District Health and Safety policies, procedures, Workers Compensation Act and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.
20.    Supports/distributes information on healthy lifestyle and/or participation in fitness and wellness programs.
21.    Assists with educational workshops and seminars related to health, safety and wellness to a variety of District staff.
22.    Works with EFAP program partners, determines EFAP provider with committee, Committee chair of EFAP committee.  Provides EFAP information to staff and acts as a resource person for collective agreements and contract with regard to EFAP.
23.    ASWI program supervision, implementation, analysis, and strategic planning.
24.    Data input, data analysis and strategic planning with regard to health, wellness, and safety.
25.    Works with other agencies with regard to health, wellness and safety– for example, WSBC, BCPSEA, Ministry of Education, Desjardins, etc.
26.    Clerical and other duties relating to the job description.

 

Job Conditions:

1.  Work is usually indoors in well-lighted and heated buildings.  May require occasional outdoor work.
2.  There will be extensive travel within the district throughout the calendar year during all types of
weather.
