SUMMARY:Webinar – What’s the buzz on PrEP? Why public health is listening
DESCRIPTION:What are gay men hearing and saying about pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)? How are they making sense of this information? Is it changing their sexual behaviours? What are the implications for public health practice? \n‘Resonance’ is a community-based research project that asked gay men and their service providers what they understood about this new HIV prevention technology and whether it had an impact on their attitudes or behaviours. \nThis webinar\, hosted by CATIE in partnership with the National Collaborating Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCCID)\, will present key findings from this project for public health practitioners. Facilitated discussion will focus on public health implications. Invited discussants will inform the dialogue\, drawing on varied experience from jurisdictions with different policy environments and from roles in guideline development\, HIV prevention research\, or community-based clinics supporting PrEP uptake. All participants are invited to speak to the challenges\, opportunities and potential role for public health in a rapidly changing HIV prevention environment. \nThe webinar is intended for public health program managers working in the area of STBBI/HIV prevention and control or healthy sexuality programming\, as well as frontline public health nurses and physicians. It may be most relevant for those working in urban public health settings. \nAbout the presenter \nSan Patten lives in Halifax\, Nova Scotia where she works as a health research and evaluation consultant. She completed a master’s degree in community health sciences at the University of Calgary. San is an adjunct professor in sociology at Mount Allison University\, teaches at the University of Alberta (School of Public Health) and is a co-investigator of the Centre for HIV Prevention Social Research based at the University of Toronto. Much of San’s recent work is focused on new HIV prevention technologies. \nDiscussants \nRiyas Fadel has a degree in sexology from the Université du Québec à Montréal. He works as a research and planning analyst for the STBBI service of the Quebec ministry of health. His work focuses on STBBI prevention with gay men and other men who have sex with men\, surveillance\, and prevention using antivirals. \nJoshua Edward works as knowledge translation manager for Health Initiative for Men (HIM) in Vancouver. Joshua develops HIM’s sexual health promotion and associated campaigns in partnership with a variety of local public health agencies and stakeholders\, with a specific focus on community-driven initiatives and messaging. In addition to his work at HIM\, Joshua is a doctoral candidate at the University of British Columbia. \nPlease note that this webinar will be presented in English. A French version of this webinar will be presented on March 8\, 2016. Subscribe to CATIE’s webinar e-mail list to stay informed: www.catie.ca/subscriptions \nRegister now

SUMMARY:REGISTER NOW - NORTHERN BC CITIZEN SERIES WEBINAR
DESCRIPTION:Nothing About Us Without Us: Practices and Tools to Build Community Engagement and Participation \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \nEngaging community members in the planning and development of healthier communities can be at once the most difficult and most rewarding thing to accomplish. Join us for this session on the promises and perils of community engagement\, practical tools\, approaches and real-life examples from northern communities. \nThe Tale of Three Communities: \nIt wasn’t the best of times but it wasn’t the worst of times either. Three small but fictional communities in Northern BC hosted community engagement events in the fall of 2015. In the first community\, hardly anyone came out and the organizers were frustrated and discourage. In the second community\, many people showed up but they were in a bad mood and used the event to attack the organizers who were surprised and unprepared. In the third community\, the public participation event drew a large and lively crowd\, in spite of a huge snow storm the day before. The event was full of laughter and the ideas and commitments were free-flowing. The organizers were encouraged and further work together was proposed.  What accounts for such dramatic differences in the hosting of a community engagement or public participation activities? \nREAD MORE of the webinar thinkpiece….

SUMMARY:Webinar: “I am invited. And you?” An Innovative Breast Cancer Screening Project
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 28th\, 2015 – 1:30-3:00pm (Eastern) \nRegister now! (https://cdpac.webex.com/)  NOTE: This webinar will be presented in French with English available through simultaneous translation. Presentation slides will be made available in both English and French. \nThis webinar will present key results and learnings from a project called “I am invited. And you?”. This multistrategic project involves a large-scale social marketing campaign intended to increase participation in the Program by women with low literacy and those from ethnocultural communities. The project will increase awareness of the importance of the early detection of breast cancer and taking action: getting a mammogram in a designated Montreal screening centre. More specifically\, the project involves re-inviting women who have not participated in the Program for the past two years (about 72\,000 women)\, followed by a second contact by telephone or in writing. A multiplying network will also be rolled out in women’s living environments\, in order to encourage personalized contact between women and a credible person. The highlights of the project evaluation and key factors in success will be showcased.

SUMMARY:Urban Socioecological health - webalogue
DESCRIPTION:Ecohealth in Action & Practice – CoPEH-Canada presents this Webalogue\nOur speakers will be:\n**Dr. Jeff Masuda\, Queens University\, School of Kinesiology and Health Studies\nFor decades\, public and population health researchers have been called upon to both support and to lead a new social and political movement for health. In recent years\, various urban social movements in support of food\, housing\, clean air\, and other social-environmental determinants of health have begun to coalesce in their efforts to demand a wholesale urban transformation based on principles of sustainability and equity.\nWhile such a movement provides a ripe opportunity for public health researchers and policymakers to support with interventions to promote socioecological health equity\, we have persistently fallen short of this goal\, choosing instead to continue on a path of framing approaches within an impoverished “evidence based” model that remains thoroughly “proximal” in its ambitions. The failure to grasp a central socioecological focus for the field reflects a longstanding contradiction public health that on the one hand “talks the talk” while on the other ignoring and even opposing urban social movements over the past 20-30 years. I’ll spend my time in this webalogue proposing specific suggestions as to why now is the time for this to change and how we might reposition ourselves in the world to accomplish this transformation. I would situate this problem\, and the solutions within the context of the present “tyranny of evidence” that has returned to the forefront of mainstream public health. \n**Ms. Michelle Colussi\, Manager at the Canadian Centre for Community Renewal \nThere is a growing focus being placed on the power of relationship and co-operation between neighbours as a means of strengthening everything from safety to emergency planning\, food security and responding to climate change.  Michelle will share the approach of the Transition Town movement and the Resilient Neighbourhoods initiative (a partnership between BC healthy Communities\, Social Planning Council and Transition Victoria: www.resilientneighbourhoods.ca) in Victoria.  Hear how these grassroots efforts are supporting celebration and mutual support\, creating bumping places\, gardens and orchards and structuring street level sharing economies.  Explore the opportunities and challenges of scaling for systemic impacts inclusive of lower income families.\nTo REGISTER for this event please click HERE \nFor more information on this event\, past and future webalogues please visit: http://ecohealthkta.net/
