SUMMARY:Innoweave Impact Accelerator Workshop!
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in enhancing the impact of your organization or collaborative? Are you interested in exploring the different social innovation approaches and tools that are helping other organizations achieve greater impact? \nIf yes\, you should register for the Innoweave Impact Accelerator\, hosted in partnership with BC Healthy Communities. \nWhat is the Innoweave Impact Accelerator? \nSince its launch in 2012\, Innoweave has leveraged social innovation tools to help hundreds of organizations advance their mission and generate greater impact. We have used that experience to develop the Innoweave Impact Accelerator\, a mini-workshop that helps organizations and collaboratives to clarify the impact they are working to achieve. A clear impact focus helps organizations and collaboratives more easily identify which social innovation approaches (such as developing a social enterprise) they can leverage to achieve and accelerate their impact. \nWhat does the Innoweave Impact Accelerator involve? \nThe Impact Accelerator will: \n·         Provide leadership teams and collaboratives an opportunity to step away from the day-to-day activities and think critically about the impact they are trying to achieve through their work. \n·         Guide organizations and collaboratives through activities that will help them translate their aspirational mission into specific achievable impact goals. The session also introduces Theory of Change – a clear and actionable hypothesis of how an organization or collaborative will achieve its intended impact. \n·         Provide participants with the opportunity to engage with and learn from other organizations that have successfully implemented social innovation tools to achieve their impact. \n·         Understand supports available through the Innoweave process\, and highlight opportunities to access coaching funding through Innoweave. \nEvent details\nDeadline: Please register your team by Friday\, October 14th\, 2016\nRegister: Sign up here. Organizations are encouraged to bring a team of 2-3 people to the workshop (e.g. members of their leadership team\, board members and in some cases key stakeholders/advisors). \nWhat happens after attending an Innoweave Impact Accelerator session? \nOrganizations who want to build off their work in the Impact Accelerator and further clarify their impact may apply directly for the next wave of the Impact & Strategic Clarity module – apply here. \nOrganizations that attend the Impact Accelerator will also have the opportunity to register and apply for upcoming introductory webinars and full-day workshops focused on specific Innoweave modules that are designed to accelerate impact. A list of all upcoming webinars and workshops is available here.  Organizations that attend a full-day workshop for a specific module are eligible to apply for Innoweave Implementation Funding in January and July of each year. \nIf you have questions or would like additional information\, please email info@innoweave.ca

Join moderator Mayor Lisa Helps and panelists Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi and Khalil Shariff\, CEO of the Aga Khan Foundation Canada for a conversation that promises to be informative\, inspiring and interactive! \nWhat makes us happy? These topics and more will be explored on a local and global scale. \nFollowing the panel discussion\, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions\, engage with one another\, and share their thoughts on sounding boards. This creative input will be compiled to create a “crowd-sourced” well-being handbook that will be made available by the event’s partner agencies. \nAbout the Panelists \nMayor Naheed Nenshi is currently serving his second term and is Calgary’s 36th mayor. During his first term in office\, Mayor Nenshi’s leadership resulted in many positive changes to build better communities\, keep Calgarians moving\, and transform government to reinforce a culture of constant citizen-focused improvement at the City of Calgary. His passion is to make cities\, especially Calgary\, work better. \nTo support community wellness\, the City of Calgary invested $70 million towards establishing the Genesis Centre of Community Wellness\, which opened its doors in 2012 and houses branches of the Calgary Public Library and YMCA Calgary\, a human and social services centre\, indoor and outdoor sports facilities and community gathering places. \nKhalil Shariff joined Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) as Chief Executive Officer in August 2005. He was previously with the Toronto office of McKinsey & Company\, an international management consultancy. Mr. Shariff served on AKFC’s National Committee for five years and has cultivated his interest in international development and conflict resolution through activities including Deputy Editor-in-Chief for the Harvard Negotiation Law Review; Policy Coordinator and Research Associate for the Harvard Program on Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research; and Legal Intern for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha\, Tanzania. \nEstablished in 1980\, the Aga Khan Foundation Canada is a registered Canadian charity and an agency of the worldwide Aga Khan Development Network\, a group of development agencies with individual mandates that address social\, economic and cultural dimensions of development. Active in 30 countries\, these agencies share a mission to improve living conditions and opportunities for the poor\, without regard to their faith\, origin or gender. \nCommunity Partners \nWellness Matters – A Dialogue on Connection\, Belonging and the Power of Well-being is hosted by the Victoria Foundation with support from the City of Victoria\, Canadian Club of Victoria\, Canadian Diabetes Association\, Downtown Victoria Business Association\, Heart Pharmacy and Fort Properties Ltd. Each of the community organizations works to increase the well-being of citizens and create community connection and belonging. \nThis year\, the Victoria Foundation is celebrating its 80th anniversary and will publish its 11th annual “Victoria’s Vital Signs”. The publication is a community check-up that evaluates the Capital Region as a place to live\, learn\, work and grow\, and measures the health of our city\, assigning grades in a number of areas that are critical to Victoria’s vitality. A community foundation and a registered charity\, the Victoria Foundation connects visionary donors with causes that truly matter\, to invest in people\, projects and non-profit organizations that make our communities stronger – now and for the long-term. \nPre-Registration\nPre-register early to attend the event as seats are limited. Tickets are free and can be obtained through Eventbrite in advance. \nComplimentary refreshments will be provided. For more information\, visit: www.victoria.ca

SUMMARY:Can Public Engagement Change Systems? October 6th - SFU Vancouver
DESCRIPTION:Addressing our toughest challenges—such as climate change\, housing affordability\, inequality or xenophobia—requires broad public will and action. Yet\, these challenges are also rooted in far-reaching and complex systems that include many different institutions and networks. Facilitated by Centre for Dialogue director Shauna Sylvester\, this interactive conversation will address complex questions\, such as how citizen engagement initiatives can change the systems that affect our most difficult problems. \nLocation: SFU Vancouver – Harbour Centre\, Room 1400-1430 (Segal Centre)\nAdmission: $15+GST Adults | $8+GST Students/Seniors \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:2016 PHABC Conference - Call for Abstracts
DESCRIPTION:Strengthening Healthy Development: Education and Public Health in Partnership \nDecember 11-12\, 2016\nSheraton Airport Hotel\n7551 Westminster Hwy\, Richmond\, BC \n Call for Abstracts \nONLINE SUBMISSION: opens August 15th   \nOnline Submission Form \nSUBMISSION DEADLINE: September 15th\, 2016 at 5:00 pm \n The Public Health Association of British Columbia is hosting its annual conference for 2016. This year’s theme is “Strengthening Healthy Development: Education and Public Health in Partnership.” This 2016 conference takes place on the 30th anniversary of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion\, a foundational document within the Public Health sector. The Charter recognized that health promotion cannot be achieved by the health sector acting alone and that health promotion involved advocating for structural change and nurturing individual empowerment to allow individuals\, families and communities to increase control over their health and well-being. \nLikewise\, education is not limited to a single sector. Here we include both formal and informal education\, from early childhood to old age – in other words\, lifelong learning. At the same time\, we have a particular focus on the main settings for formal education – schools (K-12) as well as preschool settings\, and post-secondary education. \nWe recognize that the health and education sectors have different but complementary objectives; improving the health of learners contributes to improved learning outcomes\, while better education improves health. These themes are reflected throughout the conference planning and program. \nPurpose: \nTo create a forum for deliberative dialogue and respectful exchange of ideas related to the intersections of public health and education\, in order to build meaningful collaboration\, mutual understanding and support between the public health and education communities in achieving well-being for all.\nTo view the full call for abstracts

SUMMARY:You’ve Got to Move it\, Move it!  - Building Communities that Motivate People to Walk and Bike
DESCRIPTION:BC Healthy Living Alliance invites you to an exciting webinar on healthier built environments. \nCommunities that make it more convenient and comfortable for people to walk and bike to where they need to go – also make it easier for people to be healthier. \nThere are stacks of studies that back this up.  Just last year\, the My Health\, My Community surveys found that Metro Vancouver residents who commuted by transit\, bike or on foot were twice as likely to get the recommended levels of physical activity.  Those that regularly walked or biked were also 48% more likely to be a healthy weight compared to those who commuted by car. \nThe relationship between active modes of travel and health is so strong that the World Health Organization has called investment in active transportation infrastructure a ‘best buy’ for governments. \nSo let’s talk about how to build support for community planning that makes it easier for people to get around by bike and on foot! \nClick here to register: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/3310558417949307906 \nSpeakers:  \nAngus McAllister will delve into recent research done for the Real Estate Foundation of BC on public opinions and attitudes around sustainability and the built environment. He’ll give us a sense of how these issues and what language resonates with British Columbians across the province\, in urban centres\, suburbs and small towns. \nDr. Kay Teschke will explain what her research says about different kinds of bike facilities – including which ones are safer and which ones motivate more people to start bicycling. \nJanet Rerecich will walk us through some of the online resources and tools that were developed through BCRPA’s BEAT project (Built Environment and Active Transportation).  She’ll show us how small communities have used the BEAT tools to build support and plans for active transportation and leveraged funding to get facilities built. \n
