Numerous frameworks exist to help explain the relationship between the social determinants and health experiences and outcomes. SUMMARY:Webinar – What’s the buzz on PrEP? Why public health is listening
DESCRIPTION:What are gay men hearing and saying about pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)? How are they making sense of this information? Is it changing their sexual behaviours? What are the implications for public health practice? \n‘Resonance’ is a community-based research project that asked gay men and their service providers what they understood about this new HIV prevention technology and whether it had an impact on their attitudes or behaviours. \nThis webinar\, hosted by CATIE in partnership with the National Collaborating Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCCID)\, will present key findings from this project for public health practitioners. Facilitated discussion will focus on public health implications. Invited discussants will inform the dialogue\, drawing on varied experience from jurisdictions with different policy environments and from roles in guideline development\, HIV prevention research\, or community-based clinics supporting PrEP uptake. All participants are invited to speak to the challenges\, opportunities and potential role for public health in a rapidly changing HIV prevention environment. \nThe webinar is intended for public health program managers working in the area of STBBI/HIV prevention and control or healthy sexuality programming\, as well as frontline public health nurses and physicians. It may be most relevant for those working in urban public health settings. \nAbout the presenter \nSan Patten lives in Halifax\, Nova Scotia where she works as a health research and evaluation consultant. She completed a master’s degree in community health sciences at the University of Calgary. San is an adjunct professor in sociology at Mount Allison University\, teaches at the University of Alberta (School of Public Health) and is a co-investigator of the Centre for HIV Prevention Social Research based at the University of Toronto. Much of San’s recent work is focused on new HIV prevention technologies. \nDiscussants \nRiyas Fadel has a degree in sexology from the Université du Québec à Montréal. He works as a research and planning analyst for the STBBI service of the Quebec ministry of health. His work focuses on STBBI prevention with gay men and other men who have sex with men\, surveillance\, and prevention using antivirals. \nJoshua Edward works as knowledge translation manager for Health Initiative for Men (HIM) in Vancouver. Joshua develops HIM’s sexual health promotion and associated campaigns in partnership with a variety of local public health agencies and stakeholders\, with a specific focus on community-driven initiatives and messaging. In addition to his work at HIM\, Joshua is a doctoral candidate at the University of British Columbia. \nPlease note that this webinar will be presented in English. In 2014\, Trevor returned to hockey and was named the Vancouver Canucks’ President of Hockey Operations & Alternate Governor\, NHL. \n  \nIn addition to his many on-ice accomplishments\, Trevor was named the recipient of the Order of British Columbia (2003) and the Order of Canada (2010). Trevor is also a partner in Club16/Trevor Linden Fitness. His dedication to the community continues through the projects of the Trevor Linden Foundation\, supporting youth development programs that encourage young people to discover their strengths and realize their potential. Presentation slides will be made available in both English and French. \nThis webinar will present key results and learnings from a project called “I am invited. And you?”. This multistrategic project involves a large-scale social marketing campaign intended to increase participation in the Program by women with low literacy and those from ethnocultural communities. The project will increase awareness of the importance of the early detection of breast cancer and taking action: getting a mammogram in a designated Montreal screening centre. More specifically\, the project involves re-inviting women who have not participated in the Program for the past two years (about 72\,000 women)\, followed by a second contact by telephone or in writing. A multiplying network will also be rolled out in women’s living environments\, in order to encourage personalized contact between women and a credible person. The highlights of the project evaluation and key factors in success will be showcased.
