SUMMARY:PHABC Annual Conference 2022 – Our Planet\, Our Health
DESCRIPTION:  \nRegistration is now on! Click here to join us in Victoria this November!\n  \nDraft Program at a Glance Released!! Check out the great line up of speakers\, presentations and workshops HERE.\n  \nAbout the Conference\nPHABC is pleased to share this year’s conference topic: “Our Planet\, Our Health: Creating Well-Being Societies and Making Peace with Nature.” The conference topic was inspired by recent WHO and UN initiatives\, as well as the importance of recognizing the role Indigenous knowledge has in creating a healthy relationship between humans and the Earth. \nThere is local and global urgency to focus on making peace with nature. According to the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres\, “Humanity is waging war on nature. This is suicidal.” (December 2020). The UN 2021 report Making Peace with Nature further identified climate change\, biodiversity loss and pollution as a “triple crisis” that threatens our well-being. \nCreating well-being societies is dependent on making peace with nature and focusing on ecojustice and applying an eco-social approach to everything we do. The public health community has an opportunity here to weave eco-social approaches into their work to address both ecological and social injustices. Creating a truly healthy public will only be possible if we work together to create healthy\, sustainable and equitable communities. \nConference Themes and Structure\nTo invigorate public health practice\, education and research towards a healthy\, just and sustainable future. The conference plenary sessions will focus on four inter-related themes: \n\nMaking Peace with Nature for Public Health\nEcojustice/Eco-social Equity and Public Heath\nWell-being Societies\nLocal (Practice) and Action\n\nClick here to read more about our Conference Goals & Objectives!\n  \nAccreditation\nRoyal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada\nFor information on how this activity fits in the Royal College Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program\, please visit the Royal College’s website (royalcollege.ca/moc). SUMMARY:Public Health Systems Governance: Better Understanding and Acting on Governance to Strengthen Public Health Systems in Canada
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic has posed many questions and presented numerous challenges for public health systems in Canada and around the world. Acknowledging these\, in her latest report\, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer\, Dr. Theresa Tam\, has called for a strengthening and renewal of public health systems in Canada so that they are better prepared to respond to current and future public health challenges. \nThe preparation of her report was informed in part by four reports commissioned from independent experts. We take advantage of their publication to present and discuss the main results of the one entitled “Governing for the public’s health: Governance options for a strengthened and renewed public health system in Canada”. \nThis webinar will begin with a presentation by Dr. Di Ruggiero\, who will share some of the findings of the report\, focusing on key pathways for strengthening\, improving\, and transforming the governance of public health systems. A panel of two experts will then share their thoughts on governance models and their implications for the future of public health systems. This interactive panel will include Professor David Hunter and Dr Jean-Louis Denis. \nThis webinar should enable participants to: \n• Define public health system governance and recognize its main components.\n• Recognize issues related to the governance of public health systems in Canada.\n• Identify avenues for action to strengthen the governance of public health systems in Canada.

SUMMARY:OD PREP Episode 7: A Conversation with Laura Shaver and Reija Jean from BCAPOM
DESCRIPTION:The OD PREP series is coming to a close with our seventh and final installment: A Conversation with Laura Shaver and Reija Jean from the BC Association of People on Opiate Maintenance (BCAPOM) We are ending on a hopeful note. Laura and Reija are incredible peer activists who have worked tirelessly to expand access to opioid agonist therapy (OAT) across the province. \n  \nSafer supply is a critical issue. The Province has rolled out numerous iterations of prescription programs for people to supplement or replace their use of street drugs and reduce their risk of poisoning and overdose. Such a policy intervention is unprecedented and largely due to the lobbying efforts of grassroots organizations such as BCAPOM and VANDU. \n  \nJoin us next Tuesday\, November 30th at 2:30pm to hear from Reija and Laura about their organization\, partnerships and advocacy for an expanded peer network and access to OAT. The format is casual. They plan to chat with one another and with you to share their knowledge and answer your questions. As always\, the webinar is free to join!  \n  \nClick here to register. We hope to see you there!
